Trinity Inlet is the main estuary system of Cairns, it is around 9km in length and lined with mangroves, lots of structure, a complex network of feeder creeks and a relatively large tidal range. Trinity Inlet is a very healthy and thriving ecosystem with a complex network of creeks, seagrass, many deep holes, flats and numerous sunken vessels.
Fishing Trinity Inlet will reward fisherman with Golden Snapper, Grunter, Mangrove Jacks, Trevally, Queenfish, Barramundi andĀ general bread and butter fish species like Bream and Flathead. Of course the fish vary dependent on the season with Golden Snapper, Gunter, Mangrove Jacks, Barramundi the main catch during warmer months and Trevally and Queenies in the cooler dry season.
During slow tidal movements its best to fish the deeper holes in Trinity InletĀ and faster tides should see fisherman targeting shallow banks and structure. It is also more productive to follow the tides up and down the Inlet, fishing up the estuary as the tide rises and back down toward the mouth as the tide drop. Drifting with the tide slowly is also a good way to find productive eddies and spots often overlooked. On large high tides its well worth fishing any underwater drains towards the mouths as the tide runs out. Finding good flat sections during low are great to target as the tide comes in.
A general rule of thumb for fishing any Far North Queensland river is to fish either side of the low tide.
Trinity Inlet provides several places for land based fisherman to drop a line. At the mouth of the inlet there is a pier rock wall that often holds Barramundi, Trevally and Mangrove Jacks, also a great place to flick lures.
Down from the mouth at the northern most boat ramp is a Trawler basin which is good for land based fishing for Bream, Mangrove Jack and the odd Barramundi.
The southern most boat ramps also provide good access for land based fisherman, both are located on bends with deeper holes great for bait fishing in the Trinity Inlet.
