Carnarvon is located 900km north of Perth on the shallow sandy Gascoyne River. The waters around Carnarvon are pretty shallow, however the fishing can be good. Famous for year round Mulloway fishing, Carnarvon is has man options for land based and small boat anglers. For land based anglers Carnarvon fishing spots are mostly creek mouths and beach fishing. A small boat significantly opens up the options particularly when targeting Mangrove Jack, Bream and Flathead in the creeks. Fishing Carnarvon anglers can expect Mulloway, Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Tailor, Mangrove Jack and the odd Threadfin Salmon.

Gascoyne Flats

To the south of Canarvon are the Gascoyne flats. Abundant with sea life the flats fish well for Whiting, Bream and Flathead. Fishing here is by boat only as access to these spots are difficult land based.

Massey Bay

Massey Bay is a shallow bay with many small inlets that hold some great fish. The shallow inlets can only be accessed on high tide and it is easy to get stranded and stuck for hours if the tides are judged wrong. The inlets hold Mangrove Jack, Bream, Cod, Flathead and Whiting.

South Carnarvon

Bream, Whiting and Flathead from the shore of the small creek that leads to the marina.

Carnarvon Town

Close and accessible to town, fishing the along the Carnarvon Esplanade produces mostly Bream.

Pelican Point

Tailor move into the mouth of the river on both the outgoing and incoming tide. Best fished at dusk for tailor. Also try along the beach front.

Carnarvon Jetty

Mulloway caught all year round from the Carnarvon Jetty. Tailor, Trevally and the odd Threadfin Salmon are also caught here. Best fished at dawn, dusk and night. If the water is clear enough big soft plastics work on Mulloway, soft and hard vibes are also affective. Metal slugs for tailor.

Gascoyne River Mouth and timbers

The Gascoyne River mouth holds Flathead, Whiting, Tailor, Trevally and the odd Mangrove Jack. Trolling is a good way to find Flathead. Any structure like timbers will also hold fish. The timber breakwalls are a good place to get started targeting fish. The breakwalls can be access land based from Babbage Island Road.

One Tree Point

One Tree Point is a good spot to explore for Mangrove Jack and Flathead. The small creeks have some good structure for cast small to medium hard body lures. Summer is the best time to target Mangrove Jack and flathead will be most active during spring.

Miabooyla Beach

Miabooyla beach is a productive fishing spot close to Carnarvon. Big mulloway and tailor frequent the beach and the key to success is finding a deeper channel and fishing at dawn and dusk.

Two wheel drive access will get anglers to the car park behind the dune and also access to fishing the creek for Flathead, Whiting and the odd Mangrove Jack. Four wheel drives can access the beach and drive north for kilometers in search of the best channels. Mulloway and Tailor can be caught all along this beach.

    says:

the 1 mile jetty no longer exists, demolished 2021/2 due to storm damage, also, due to silting, access to the inner harbour is crap apart from the shallowest of drafts

    • Luke Van Lathum

      says:

Thank you for the update John, it might be a while until we get back there to re-assess!
