Balla Balla is an isolated camp site with no facilities, it is mostly only visited by keen anglers. There is no shade, toilets or freshwater so come prepared. The boat ramp is best used on an upper tide and the best fishing is done during neap tides.

There isn’t too many land based fishing options at Balla Balla, but to increase the chances of a good catch plan your fishing trip around the neap tides. There are several access spots along the creek, soaking a bait is probably the best way to land a big Jewfish, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack or Barramundi.

Balla Balla is most famous for the West Moore Island fishing lodge, which produces some of the best flats fishing in Australia. Located only a few kilometers offshore, anglers with a small boat can access the islands and surrounding creeks for fantastic fishing, however the Balla Balla produces some fantastic fishing.

The nearby creeks aren’t all the same, some hold water on low tide while others don’t. The creeks that hold water on low tide are generally the most productive for all fish species. Fishing Balla Balla anglers can expect Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Threadfin Salmon, Trevally, Queenfish, Black Jewfish, Fingermark, Blue Salmon and the usual by-catch of Bream, Flathead and Whiting.

Offshore, around the islands and over the flats has some of Australia’s best flats fishing. Trevally and Queenfish are easily sight casted as they cruise the flats. The reefs produce Tuskfish, Coral Trout and Emperor, although the best spots are further offshore.

Where to go fishing near Balla Balla?

  • Depuch Island North Point Deep hole approximate 16m+. Spanish Mackerel, Spangled Emperor, Coral Trout and big Trevally
  • Balla Balla Creek Rocks A good land based spot cast with the tide close to the rocks, big Jewfish, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark and Threadfin Salmon.
  • Balla Balla Creek B Good rock ledge in deep water produces good fish on neap tides. Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon and Black Jewfish.
  • Balla Balla Creek D The mouth of the creek can drain completely dry depending on the sand bar and channels. There are deep pools in the creek and walking along here during low tide cast hard body lures produces Mangrove Jacks, Cod and the odd Barramundi. Threadfin Salmon around the mouth of the creeks.
  • Balla Balla Creek C Holds water in all tides. This creek produces Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Black Jewfish, Mangrove Jacks, Cod, Trevally and Queenfish. Careful when navigating into and out the creek.
  • Depuch Island North The north end of the island generally has clearer water and the fishing is good for Coral Trout, Tuskfish, Trevally and Queenfish. Spanish Mackerel also turn up and casting metal slugs, poppers or shallow running minnows is the go. Trolling along here is also effective for Spanish Mackerel.
  • Depuch Island South The south of the island has some deep holes and some channels that don't change. Sound around for likely looking rock bars for Jewfish and Threadfin Salmon. If there is dirty water around from a large tide, then Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon will be hunting bait fish trying to take shelter in the murky water. Jigging soft plastics and vibes during the neaps tides is the best method. During a spring tide live bait is the only option Barra and Threadfin here.
  • Balla Balla Creek Mouth Troll the creek mouth for Barramundi in Summer and Threadfin Salmon in Winter. Black Jewfish are also caught in the river mouth. During neap tides use soft plastic and soft vibes slow jigged on the bottom for big threadies and jewfish.
  • Balla Balla Creek Good deep holes along here, in summer is a good time to troll for Barramundi. Throughout the year Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jacks and Jewfish are in the deep holes, try trolling deep diving lures. On neap tides jigging vibes and soft plastics in the deep holes is effective on big Jew and Threadfin.
