Trolling along the reef is a good way to catch Spanish Mackerel, Tuna, Golden Trevally and Queenfish. Working soft plastics and poppers along the reef during an outgoing tide is also a good way to target Spangled Emperor. Remember the there is a marine reserve close by.

Where to go fishing near Point Samson Reef?

  • Sherlock Bay and Small Creeks Sherlock Bay and the small creeks south east of Point Samson are all well work exploring. During summer is the best chance at Barramundi, focus efforts around the small creeks and gutters. Threadfin Salmon can often be seen working bait into the shallows of the river mouths through the bay. The Threadfin will also move into the creeks to find bait depending on the tides.
  • Cossack Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Cod, Bream and Flathead throughout the creek. Working the small feeder creeks with hard body lures on an outgoing tide is effective of Barra and Threadies. Use shallow diving hard body lures like the B52 bomber. On the incoming tide don’t be afraid to go up the small feeder creeks working shallow diving lures for Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon. Mangrove Jack further upstream in the deeper pools, work the bends and snags with deep diving lures like the Killalure River Ratz 2.
  • Sams Creek During summer the small feeder creeks hold Barramundi. Threadfin Salmon also hang around the shallow feeder throughout the year. Mangrove Jack, Cod, Trevally and Queenfish can be targeted through around the mouth of the creek. Working lures along the mangrove banks during high tide produces good results. Target the small feeder creeks on the outgoing tide for a chance at Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon.
  • Bezout Island Approximately 12km from the Point Samson boat ramp, Bezout Island has excellent reef fishing for Emperor, Coral Trout, Tuskfish and Mackerel.
  • Cape Lambert Jetty Cape Lambert Jetty produces great fishing for Black Jewfish. They can be tempted by good sized soft plastics bounced off the bottom. Trolling along the jetty also produces Tuna and Mackerel.
  • Settlers Beach Good fishing around the river mouth and mangroves on high tide for Yellowfin Whiting and Bream.
  • Point Samson Marina A walkway on the eastern side provides anglers access to deeper water where the odd Black Jewfish has been caught. The most common catches are Bream, Flathead, Trevally, Queensfish and Cod. Threadfin Salmon and Barramundi also move into the creek and marina for a feed, making them a possibility.
  • Point Samson Reefs The rock walls and reefs close to town have Trevally, Queenfish, Cod and the odd Mangrove Jack and Barramundi. It is well worth walking and exploring along some these points.
  • Point Samson Causeway The causeway can fish well at times, particularly during summer on an out going tide. Barramundi, Mangrove Jack and pelagics are all common catches here.
  • Sams Creek The small creek inlet on the western side has bream, flathead and the odd Mangrove Jack. The reefs and coastline opposite is a no fishing area.
  • Dixon Island Be careful of the fish farm not far west of Dixon Island. Good reef fishing on the western side of Dixon Island. The reefs produce Coral Trout, Emperor, Tuskfish, Cod, Trevally, Queenfish and Mackerel. Trolling with shallow diving hard body lures on an incoming tide is a sure way to hook mackerel. Bottom bouncing soft plastics and vibes works well for Tuskfish, Emperor and Coral Trout.
