Evans River is about 40km south of Ballina, descends 21 meters and is roughly 17 kilometers long, it is a fairly small river system however there are some fun fishing spots at Evans Head. Evans River is classes as a barrier river estuary, the mouth of the river has big rock walls either side to ensure the river mouth doesn’t close up due to sand movement. Further upstream is a weir which then turns into Rocky Mouth Creek where it joins the Richmond River.

There are a few good land based fishing spots at Evans River, most of the fish caught in the river are Bream, Flathead and Whiting. At the mouth of Evans river from the rock walls anglers can target Tailor, Mulloway and Luderick.

The mouth of Evans River is a popular gateway to fishing offshore from Evans Head, where are some fantastic fishing spots for Cobia, Snapper, Tuna and Pearl Perch.

Recommended fishing gear for Evans Head

In Evans River a 4-6kg spin outfit with braid and fluorocarbon leader will cover most fishing in Evans River. Bream are best targeted with a more finesse approach so the lighter the setup the better especially using lures. Small hard body lures work around jetties and any rocky structure. Flathead love pink soft plastics bounced off the bottom with lightly weighted jig heads.

Targeting Tailor anglers can use the same setup, tailor will take metal slugs around the 50-90g mark. If you are chasing Mulloway off the headlands or rock walls then a beefier setup around 12kg is ideal, live bait on a running ball sinker works well, however mulloway will also take soft plastics and even hard body lures in some circumstances.
