Cudgen Creek is a small, shallow creek at the popular tourist destination of Kingscliff. Kingscliff fishing spots consist of fishing Cudgen Creek for Flathead, Whiting, Luderick and Bream, while the boaties head offshore for Spanish Mackerel, Dolphin Fish, Snapper, Pearl Perch and more!
If you have a few hours to pass or just looking to relax with the family, Kingscliff and Cudgen Creek are a great place to pump for yabbies and sit back with a line in the water. For more dedicated anglers a kayak is the best option, it provides steal and access to shallow waters for Flathead, Whiting and Bream. Beach fishing is also good to the north along Wommil Bay, while to the south Kingscliff beach down to Cabarita and Norries headland has many gutters to target Tailor, Bream and Flathead. The incoming tide seems to work best along this beach and after some big swell has passed.
Fish as light as possible in Cudgen creek using small running ball sinkers and hooks. Land based fishing is best done with bait. In a kayak or boat it is possible to target flathead successfully on small soft plastics.
Heading out to the beaches, anglers will need a longer rod and slightly heavier setup, but still fish light! 2-6kg will cover most scenarios around here, unless you’re targeting mulloway.
