Bunbury has a diverse range of fishing spots, it is particularly popular for offshore fishing with a artificial reef just 5km offshore in relatively calm waters. Bunbury fishing spots offshore offers anglers the chance at Mulloway, Samson Fish, Pink and Queen Snapper. Bunbury also offers some great land based and estuary fishing spots, Mulloway frequently come in the Cut channel where Mulloway will be feeding at night. Land based anglers can also expect Tailor and Herring around the Cut.

The large Leschenault estuary, Preston and Collie River’s produce fairly good Black Bream fishing. These areas are best fished from Kayak or small boat where anglers can cast tight into structure and snags. The Collie River also produces small Mulloway in the deep holes, they are often a by-catch when anglers are targeting Black Bream.

The Cut

A popular land based fishing spot, the Cut in Bunbury produces Tailor, Herring, Mulloway and Australian Salmon in Autumn.

Leschenault Inlet

The inlet produces okay fishing for Black Bream, Herring and Whiting. Lots of blue swim crabs during the warmer months, easily scooped up in a net.

Bunbury Harbour

The Bunbury Harbour is a fairly good land based fishing spot that produces Tailor and Mulloway. The Break-wall is the best fishing spot for targeting big Tailor and Mulloway. Inside the harbour the deep shipping channel can produce some big Mulloway particularly at night.

Back Beach

South of the break-wall, Back Beach at Bunbury is a fairly good land based fishing spots for common beach species, including Herring and Tailor. Tailor and Herring can be targeted on small hard bodies and metal slugs. The odd Mulloway will also turn up, mainly at night in the deeper channels. Australian salmon also come close to the beach during the annual migration in Autumn.

  • Wayne

    says:

Where in the Collie River are the BUll SHarks and large mulloway currently being caught and what is the best bait to use

    • Nick

      says:

The stretch along Australind near Barnes ave down to the mouth can produce mulloway, but they are few and fair between, little in known about their movements, but theory suggests in spring to summer they hang around the beaches close to river mouths, SOME mulloway move into estuaries around September/October before spawning and then might come back into estuaries December/January… It all depends on the bait in the rivers. The deeper holes on the river bends are probably a good place to try, early morning and dusk through into the night, try a fresh fillet of tailor, mullet or a whole pilchard, you can even flick soft plastics.

  • Billy

    says:

Smaller mulloway are also caught in in winter before the rains
