The Collie River Catchment covers 3000km2 and includes the Wellington Dam which is a valuable resource for agriculture and possibly drinking water in the future. The Collie River is made up of several tributaries including Collie River East, Collie River South, Bingham river, Brunswick River, Gervase river, Hamilton river, Harris river, Ironstone Gully, Silver Wattle Gully, Worsley River, Riches Gully and Mill Brook.

Fishing in the Collie River is mainly for Black Bream, the odd Mulloway and further upstream for Trout and Redfin Perch.

Collie River Fishing Spots

From Leschenault Estuary flats up to Treendale Road are countless snags and deep holes which during the summer months hold good numbers of Black Bream. During the warmer months small hard body minnows fish well for bream when they are high in the water column. During the months leading up to and after summer the bream tend to sit deeper therefore soft plastics slowing drifted down into the snags work dynamite.

Brunswick River also fishes well for Black Bream around the Australind area.

Trout Fishing Collie River

The Collie River is also stocked with Trout and around 45,000 triploid rainbow trout fry were released into the Collie River below Wellington Dam early 2014. By 2016 onwards these fish will provide some great light tackle lure fishing.

Trout are best targeted after the rainy winter months when the water is flowing and cool. Small hard body minnow worked close to running water and around eddies is the best bet to land a Trout.

The Trout can also be found upstream in Brunwick River along with Redfin Perch.

Redfin Perch are also dominate in the fresh water parts of both the Collie River and Brunswick River. They can fished for all year around however during the warmer months they tend to be more active, taking almost anything that lands in the water. Surface fishing for Redfin Perch in the Collie River can be very exciting, look for insects and over hanging tree branches to cast surface poppers.

The best place to fish for Trout in the Collie River is below Wellington Dam particularly in the Wellington National Park. Access can be tricky land based so be well equipped to walk through some thick bush to get to the good spots.

I used to fish for Redfin to the Murray River in Wentworth, NSW and loved their taste. This was 30 + years ago. I have been told they can be caught in the Collie River and would like to know where 1. They can be caught and 2. Good camping spots now that I am retired.
