The Noosa River is a river situated in South East Queensland and extends 40km from the township of Noosa way into the country side where the water turns fresh.

Fishing around Noosa is good all year round, with lots of different opportunities for land, boat and kayak anglers and locations like the Noosa River, Lake Macdonald and the Noosa National park headlands for rock fishing.

There are several lakes within the Noosa River these include Lake Cooloola, Lake Como, Lake Cootharaba, Lake Cooroibah and Lake Weyba. The river has two major tributaries – Kin Kin Creek and Teewah Creek.

Noosa River Fishing Spots

Starting at the Noosa headland there are some great fishing spots for land based anglers. Flicking metal slugs and soft plastics for Tailor is effective during late afternoon. Soft Plastics and metal vibes are effective at night for Mulloway and Trevally.

The headland also fishes well for reef fish particularly afternoon large storms and rough seas as the reef fish move closer inshore for shelter. Species range from Cod, Cobia, Mulloway and Trevally. The headlands are sheltered from prevailing trade winds from the South, South East and Easterly’s which is great for boater and kayak based fishermen. Bream are also common in the sheltered bays and are best targets on light tackle using soft plastics.

Generally all year round the water in the Noosa River is clear and there is often great fishing to be had for Bream, Flathead, Tailor, Trevally and futher upstream the beautiful Wild Australia Bass.

Noosa River has some great fishing spots and the river generally fishes best when the water is isn’t so clear – after rain is one of the most productive times to target estuary species.

Noosa River Bream

There is a great population of Bream in the Noosa River along with some great fishing spots to target these small sport fish. Winter is the best time to target Bream from April to October, however they are caught all year round.

At the mouth of the River fisherman of all ages soak baits here, however casting soft plastics and slugs can land anglers Tailor and Trevally.

For anglers with a 4×4 the Teewah beach has some great land based fishing spots for Whiting and Flathead

Further up from the mouth where the Noosa River parts into Weyba Creek is a good place to fish on a falling tide. Access to this spot is great for landbased fishermen – simply follow the track out to the point. Casting soft plastics into the eddy formed by 2 tides from Noosa and Weyba meeting results in Trevally, Tailor and the odd Mulloway.

The Weyba Creek area has some good fishing particularly for Bream around the jetty’s. During the summer months Mangrove Jacks can be caught – there is also okay access for land based fishermen around Sheraton Bridge. Further upstream in Weyba fishing well for Flathead, anglers should cast into the shallows in the gaps of the sea grass using soft plastics – guaranteed flathead.

Noosa River Bass

The Wild Australia bass exists in the fresh water parts of the river and they are best targeted from October to April. The best places to target Bass in the Noosa River is north of Harry’s Hut jetty, however power boating is not allowed several k’s north of Harry’s Hut.
